Description:

Sha la la Joseph you’re doing fine! You and your dreamcoat ahead of your time! One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers and the coat of many colors.
Told entirely through song with the help of a main character Narratorthe musical follows preferred son Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family.

The magical musical is full of catchy songs in a variety of styles, from a parody of French ballads (“Those Canaan Days”), to country-western (“One More Angel in Heaven”) and calypso (“Benjamin Calypso”), along with the unforgettable classics “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”

Director Vision Letter:

“Sha la la, Joseph, you’re doing fine! You and your dreamcoat, ahead of your time!” One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers and the coat of many colors.
Told entirely through song, the musical follows the story of Jacob’s favorite son, Joseph. Joseph’s life was not an easy one. Sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, he eventually ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after Potiphar discovers his wife’s attraction to his trusted slave. While imprisoned, Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams lands him in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family.
The magical musical is full of catchy songs in a variety of styles, from a parody of French ballads (“Those Canaan Days”), to country-western (“One More Angel in Heaven”) and calypso (“Benjamin Calypso”), along with the unforgettable classics “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.” I am thrilled and honored to be presented with the opportunity to direct  Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and I hope you are as excited as I am to bring this show to the stage this winter.
The cast of Joseph is diverse in ages, so all are encouraged to audition! There are roles for every one. Dancers, Israelites, Egyptians, Joseph, Jacob, Narrator, the eleven brothers and their wives, Potiphar, Pharaoh, and even a Children’s Chorus who help drive the show forward, Because this is a fully sung-through show, we have decided that audition monologues are OPTIONAL. If you want to prepare a monologue then we are excited to see you perform it, but if you choose to use your two minutes to sing only, then you are welcome to do so. Remember that if you sing only we need to see a lot of acting in your performance! You can sing one song for two minutes or sing two contrasting musical theater songs in the style of  Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This show lends itself to many song styles so take a risk and show us what you got! A dance call will also take place on your audition day. You do not need to prepare anything in advance. Our choreographer will teach you a choreographed piece for you to perform with a small group. Your Artistic Team is not looking for perfection, but rather your personality and joy for performing.
There are many lessons that can be learned in the story of Joseph’s life, but the one I want you to take away from this show experience is YOU WERE CREATED FOR A DIVINE PURPOSE! Our show verse is Romans 5:3-5 - Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. As a cast, we will dive into the book of Genesis and take a deeper look at the life of Joseph and use our show verse to understand God’s purpose for our lives. Our show song is “I Thank God” by Housefires. I encourage you to listen and learn the lyrics. I will also soon share our Spotify playlist of worship songs that we will use throughout our show journey together!
The Artistic Team is praying for each of you and we can’t wait to see you shine!
